Gathering Ground is a nonprofit organization operating two teaching farms on Washington Island with a mission to build a thriving local food system that connects people of all ages to nature, community, and healthy food. Through educational internships, cooking classes, community gardening, agroforestry, and a chestnut breeding program, we engage learners, residents, and visitors in hands-on agricultural experiences.

In 2025, Gathering Ground acquired Aznoe Farm, a 40-acre facility that expands our capacity to teach, demonstrate, and model sustainable and organic farming practices with a working market garden. Learn more at our website: gatheringgroundwi.org

Position Overview

This position is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations to ensure successful implementation of the farm plan and production schedule on a 1 acre market garden growing a variety of annual vegetables, flowers and some perennials. You will work closely with the Gathering Ground staff and Farm Manager and play a key role in both farm production and public engagement activities. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and accomplish daily farm operations to meet production goals, everything from seeding trays, planting, bed prep, harvest, and all the other tasks of a market garden
  • Support Gathering Ground’s educational and marketing goals, including working with intern and volunteers, giving farm tours, selling and preparing for farmers marke
  • Work with interns and volunteers
  • Collaborate with Gathering Ground Staff to perform farm plan and marketing 
  • This year we are seeking organic certification and the farmer will be involved in that process

 

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to work from March–November on a remote but beautiful island
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in production agriculture/horticulture OR a degree in agricultural sciences plus 2 years applied experience
  • Enthusiasm and experience with organic and sustainable systems
  • Interest in mentoring interns
