House Manager

Position Description

A Northern Sky House Manager is responsible for the smooth operation of the house (the “pre-show” guest experience outside the theater and the audience seating area) during the run of the show. House mangers welcome the public to the theatre and oversee their safety and well-being before, during, and immediately after the show. House managers also schedule, train and supervise house, volunteer and concession staff.

 Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Prepare the theatre for opening.
  • Manage Northern Sky house staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain communication with the production stage manager.
  • Maintain communication with the box office staff (supervise at park.)
  • Monitor the performance, intervene effectively if necessary to maintain optimum audience experience.
  • Coordinate the closing of the space after the event has ended and the audience has left.
  • File event reports and some reconciliation reports.
  • Deal effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring diplomacy, tact, friendliness, poise and firmness.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with a wide age-range of seasonal house staff employees and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to and appreciation for the diverse ethnic, socio-economic, disability and gender diversity of guests, staff and volunteers attending, and servicing, Northern Sky events.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and appreciation of Northern Sky’s company and service missions.
  • Maintain communication with custodial and/or park staff.
  • Participate and coordinate in any safety or first aid training as directed by the Managing Director. 
  • Knowledge of location and use of some emergency equipment, and knowledge of emergency communication procedures. 
  • Take charge during an emergency such as a medical issue, severe weather, fire, active shooter, etc.
  • Attend all meetings pertaining to the front of house responsibilities. 
  • Maintain necessary inventory on patron service equipment and supplies. 
  • Help to maintain necessary concession inventory and supplies. 
  • Maintain a professional, neat and well-groomed appearance.
  • Comfortable with two-way radios.
  • Work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Three to five years of experience working in customer service.
  • Effective leadership, communication and decision-making skills
  • Ability to be calm under pressure
  • Friendliness
  • Persuasive interpersonal skills
  • Punctuality and dependability
  • Certified in CPR, AED and first aid preferred
  • Computer literacy
  • Number of hours to be worked per week: Up to 35 (Part Time, Seasonal, Varies)
  • Shift Schedule: Day, Evening, Night
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States

Work Environments

Indoor Venue: Gould Theater

Outdoor Venue: Peninsula Park Amphitheater - Continuously working in outdoor conditions.

  • Ability to read small print as on tickets.
  • Ability to climb steps repeatedly.
  • Ability to descend/ascend ramps and inclines/declines.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Work in a fast-paced, busy environment with environmental conditions such as noise, heights, dark/dim/absence of lighting.
  • Ability to bend, stretch, reach and kneel without restriction.
  • Frequently walking, lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
