In 1904 Ben Johnson and his family founded the Hotel Washington as a place of rest for ship captains docked at Detroit Harbor. It became a favorite of summer travelers looking for a comfortable room, a hot meal and the peace and quiet of Washington Island.
In 2014 Jeannie Kokes became the newest owner of the Hotel with a vision that it could an engine for sustainability on the Island. She helped establish two farms -Hoot Blossom and Folk Tree- to supply our restaurant with organic produce and in 2019 brought in Matt Poole, Amanda Ebenhoeh and Ian Milosek to push the business's commitment to this vision even further.
Hotel Washington Restaurant is a hyper local, seasonal, “farm to fork” restaurant within a historic hotel. We work closely with Island farms and Door County products. Located on Washington Island we are dedicated to the health of our soils and strive to strengthen the food economy of the Island we love.
We rent 8 rooms with 2 shared bathrooms and a private cottage on our property from May until October. Every season we host weddings, yoga retreats and special occasions of all sizes. Our focus is always on exceptional experiences with exceptional service.
